The Jones Institute

As practitioners, we couldn’t be more passionate about how Counterstrain works as a widely effective manual therapy technique. Learn more about our why and how your own story aligns.

About Us

Even the most skilled and experienced practitioners struggle to provide pain relief for their complex patients. At The Jones Institute, we teach gentle manual therapy techniques to effectively release soft tissue restrictions throughout the entire body.

We currently offer continuing education courses and board certification in Strain Counterstrain and Fascial Counterstrain, manual therapy modalities for physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists, osteopaths, certified athletic trainers, and other licensed healthcare practitioners.

Through convenient, affordable programs and over 800 effective techniques, we give practitioners the skills and confidence they need to heal any patient, any time, anywhere.

Our Story

The Jones Institute was established in 1988 by Randall Kusunose, PT, OCS, JSCCI, and the late Lawrence Jones, DO, FAAO, to specialize in the instruction of Strain Counterstrain (SCS). In the late 1990s, Brian Tuckey, PT, OCS, JSCCI, developed Fascial Counterstrain (FCS) by building upon Dr. Jones’s paradigm of indirect manual manipulation. Together, Strain Counterstrain and Fascial Counterstrain serve as the foundation for all continuing education courses today.

Prior to co-founding The Jones Institute, Dr. Jones taught a limited number of Counterstrain classes—primarily to osteopaths. He noticed that the number of osteopaths who adopted Counterstrain into their treatment paradigm was low due to the profession’s shift from manual to allopathic modalities. The older Dr. Jones grew, the more concerned he became that if he were to die, Counterstrain would die with him. To cement his legacy and keep Counterstrain alive, Randall Kusunose introduced Dr. Jones to a new, highly-engaged audience of physical therapists.

It didn’t take long for Counterstrain to quickly spread across the United States through word of mouth. In the past two decades, The Jones Institute has formed partnerships in France, Italy, Australia, Taiwan, and China to support the growing demand for Counterstrain courses. Today, Counterstrain continues to be shared across the world as a highly regarded technique among healthcare practitioners—many of whom claim it’s the only technique that produces lasting results of its caliber. Though Dr. Jones passed away in 1996, his vision of spreading the gift of Counterstrain remains clearer than ever.
